Building Beyond Boxes: Class 5’s Creative Journey from Floor Maps to 3D Homes

In a wonderfully immersive project led by Miss Neetu Yadav, the Class 5 students of Dhanpuri Public School embarked on an inspiring learning journey that bridged the gap between geometry and design. This innovative project was part of their Chapter 9 study on “Boxes and Sketches,” where learning transcended traditional boundaries to incorporate hands-on experience, creativity, and an introduction to spatial design.

From Floor Plan to Imagination: A New Way to Learn

The project began with students designing floor maps of a house, learning to create “Deep Maps”—floor plans that laid out the structural and spatial dimensions of a home. This early exercise gave students a foundational grasp of spatial arrangements and the purpose of each space within a house. From there, the project became even more dynamic: students were challenged to convert their 2D floor maps into intricate 3D models.

Through this transformation, students demonstrated not only their understanding of layout and design but also their creativity. Many went beyond the basics, incorporating unique features like front gardens, boundary walls, windows, and doors, breathing life into their models and turning them into realistic miniature homes. Each element showcased their thoughtful approach and attention to detail, with each model becoming a personal and imaginative interpretation of what a home could be.

Presenting Their Vision

The project culminated in a model showcase where each student presented their design, explaining the layout, their choice of additions, and the overall concept behind their creations. This final presentation encouraged confidence and critical thinking, as students articulated their design choices to classmates and teachers.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Miss Yadav’s project not only reinforced concepts from their math curriculum but also cultivated essential skills such as creativity, spatial awareness, and teamwork. By allowing students to take a project from paper to model, she fostered a learning experience that was both meaningful and memorable, encouraging students to look beyond the subject matter and consider the practical applications of their knowledge.

This project is a testament to the dedication of the WES Foundation and Dhanpuri Public School in nurturing well-rounded, creative thinkers who can look at problems from multiple angles and explore solutions with an open mind. It was an inspiring journey that combined math, art, and the joy of building, leaving each student with skills and memories that extend far beyond the classroom walls.
